How It Works
Emissionless™ is an independent registry used to account for the Sale and Purchase of ton-nautical mile transactions from wind-propulsion in maritime freight. Emissionless records and decouples the environmental attributes from the physical flow of freight, allowing greater flexibility and market application for the buyers account, to reduce emissions from its own unique global supply chain. In ocean freight, these are commonly referred to as Scope 3 emissions.
Emissionless integrated the International Windship Association’s (IWSA) Global Wind Propulsion Installation List for Large Commercial Vessels used to register the global fleet by Ship Name, Type, Tonnage, Length and Technology. Once approved from the official wind-propulsion vessel list, a wind-propulsion vessel owner submits the total number of ton-nautical miles to sell for a specific term. The Emissionless General Cargo Maritime Index assigns each vessel to a Class based on grams of CO₂ / ton / nautical mile. Each Class has a specific emission reduction rating per ton-nautical mile. For each approved voyage, a shipping manifest is uploaded into the registry’s chain-of-custody. Each voyage is tracked by Class as proof of total ton-nautical miles submitted for sale from the vessel owners account transferred to the buyers account.
When a seller and buyer agree on a ton-nautical mile transaction, the contract is uploaded to the Emissionless registry and uniquely serialized to avoid double-counting during settlement between each counterparty. The register openly shows selling, transferring, purchasing and retiring. The transactions are settled and retired once the buyer submits a total ton-nautical mile record of its own supply chain matching its account balance at the registry. The buyer maintains the retired ton-nautical miles as part of its corporate record as 3rd party audited “proof” to reduce its environmental footprint and communicate to both internal and external stakeholder audiences.
